The Nebraska Brand Committee will begin implementing changes to the Livestock Brand Act due to the passage of Legislative Bill 572 in May.
Of most interest under the law is the reduction of the per-head brand inspection fee from $1 to 85 cents. The reduction will go into effect Oct. 1 and last until July 31, 2023. There will also be the addition of a 48-hour notice for local inspections, with a $50 fine for inspections scheduled less than 48 hours in advance. This rule will go into effect Sept. 1.
Other components of the new law include: the ability for brand inspectors to write their own ticket violations; e-inspections, which are still in development; dairy-shipping certificates for brandless calves less than 30 days old; mileage charges for each inspection; and potential revision of specific brand fee schedule items. These additional items will be implemented as they are evaluated.
