North Dakota will now be authorizing the use of freeze branding on cattle.
Previously, the North Dakota Century Code accepted freeze branding as official proof of ownership for horses and mules, but not cattle.
HB 1166 was first introduced to the House of Representatives by seven senators and representatives in early January. The bill was signed by Gov. Doug Burgum (R) mid-March.
“The passage of HB 1166 makes North Dakota’s brand laws consistent with most other brand states and provinces in North America,” the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) said in a released statement, “and gives livestock owners another option to choose from when identifying their cattle.”
NDSA Chief Brand Inspector Blaine Northrop also stated, “Having another way for producers to legally identify their cattle in the state aids in identification.”
In order to be a legal proof of ownership, a freeze brand must be registered. Brand registration and tips can be found at ndstockmen.org or by calling 701-223-2522.
