The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is calling on the USDA to suspend fresh beef imports from Brazil, following a USDA report highlighting an increase in imports.
USDA’s March 2022 Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook reported that monthly U.S. beef import volumes from Brazil surged to record-high numbers in early 2022. In the month of January alone, imports reached nearly 100 million pounds—a more than 500 percent increase from January one year prior.
NCBA has called for a thorough audit of the country’s animal health and food safety system.
“As beef imports from Brazil continue to rise, we urge USDA to reconsider their stance on Brazilian beef and take necessary action to safeguard the integrity of the entire U.S. food supply chain,” said NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane.
