Hemp and substances derived from hemp are now approved for commercial use in feed for pets, specialty pets and horses in Montana, as long as the feed does not contain more than 0.3 percent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
House Bill 396 was signed into law by Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) on April 11. Although the use of hemp or hemp-derived products in animal feed or supplements is not approved federally, the Montana Department of Agriculture will regulate parameters in accordance with the state’s Commercial Feeds Act and the Hemp and Cannabidiol Policy for Use in Animal Feed. Livestock-fed hemp in Montana will be unable to be sold through interstate or intrastate commerce as its use is not federally approved.
Approval for hemp in animal feed for livestock other than horses, including cattle, sheep, swine and poultry, is contingent on approval from the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. No CBD products are allowed in pet or livestock feed.
