The House of Representatives has introduced companion legislation to the American Beef Labeling Act, which would reinstate mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef.
The bill was introduced by Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) and Lance Gooden (R-TX-05) and would require the secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. trade representative to determine a way to reinstate MCOOL without violating the World Trade Organization’s rules.
“Consumers should be able to know that they are truly supporting American farmers and ranchers from labels at the store,” Khanna said. Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America and the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association have each come out in support of the bill.
