Reps. Pete Stauber (R-MN-08) and Collin Peterson (D-MN-07) introduced on Sept. 25 the Gray Wolf State Management Act of 2019, which would return gray wolf management back to state control in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
“Despite its evident recovery, the gray wolf remains listed due to arbitrary judicial decisions made thousands of miles away from gray wolf territory,” Stauber said in an official statement.
Peterson added, “Choosing between protecting their livelihood or complying with a federal judicial decision is a choice no farmer should have to make.”
After the reinstatement of the gray wolf to the Endangered Species List in 2014, management was transferred to the federal level.
“The continued listing of gray wolves restricts our states’ management options for private and public property and does nothing to enhance the recovery efforts for this species,” said John Dvorak, a member of the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) executive in an ASI statement.
