Dozens of environmental and conservation groups are urging Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) to speed up the state’s wolf introduction process. The introduction effort, passed by Colorado voters through Proposition 114 last year, will introduce wolves into the state by 2023.
The group claimed, “This murky process gives those who burned millions of dollars on misleading anti-wolf ads another shot at squelching reintroduction before the animals are even released,” said Delia Malone of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Sierra Club.
The groups claim there is enough data available now to introduce wolves to the state as early as next year.
“Fundamentally, we are concerned that the process will lead to a plan that does not incorporate the best scientific data available, thereby undercutting restoration of the wolf’s ecological role in Colorado—one of the major reasons for the reintroduction of this apex carnivore,” the letter read.
