A coalition of more than 100 conservation groups wrote to the Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, requesting a secretarial order to “halt the extinction crisis.”
The groups also sent a letter to President Joe Biden in December 2020, asking for an executive order to declare extinction a national emergency.
The recent letter comes after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to remove 22 animals and a plant from the endangered species list because of extinction.
“We’re watching so many unique animals and plants disappear before our very eyes. Policy half-measures are no longer enough. Our leaders need to commit to doing everything they can to save life on Earth,” said Stephanie Kurose, a senior policy specialist at the Center for Biological Diversity.
