President Donald Trump approved federal disaster aid for Iowa after a derecho hit the state, causing widespread damage to cities and farms.
The USDA estimates the storm caused damage to 3.57 million acres of corn and 2.5 million acres of soybeans. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) requested $4 billion in emergency funds following the Aug. 10 storm.
The Associated Press reports Trump signed only a portion of the emergency declaration—$45 million of the $3.9 billion requested—to supply federal money and omitted monies to cover homes and utility repair.
“Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will continue our joint preliminary damage assessments to determine any further eligible assistance,” the FEMA statement said. “The agency is ready to provide any and all eligible assistance and work with the state of Iowa to validate additional storm damages.”
