The House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform has released a memo detailing the committee’s investigation into the JBS cyberattack that occurred this summer.
JBS paid a ransom of $11 million in bitcoin after facing a ransomware attack in June from REvil, also known as Sodinokibi. The attackers gained access to an old network administrator account that had not been deactivated and was protected by a weak password.
Although the FBI discourages companies from paying cyberattack ransoms, JBS said it felt pressure and worried about potential costs if they did not pay the ransom.
Attackers never delivered on their promise to provide proof that they destroyed all copies of the data they stole from JBS.
