The House of Representatives passed the Farm Workforce Modernization Act in March, a bill that would help put undocumented ag workers on paths to legal status.
The Senate has been unable to agree on a bill, especially with guest worker provisions. In a tweet, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack pushed for worker reform: “We need immigration reform if we want to maximize the ability of the U.S. to produce food, while ensuring essential farm workers get a fair wage and safer workplace conditions.” In mid-June, Vilsack told reporters he made “a commitment on the part of the president to get this done.”
