Legal Ledger Brief: Comments due July 1 for wild horse management

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released a draft of an environmental assessment over alternatives for wild horse and burro management along the California and Nevada border.

The draft analyzes the gather and removal of excess animals, as well as implementation of fertility control in order to maintain the populations within appropriate management levels (AML).

The BLM believes there are 3,500 wild horses and 600 wild burros in the herd management area (HMA), compared to the AML of 758 horses and 116 burros.

The HMA in discussion contains a total of 789,852 acres across public and private lands within Lassen County, CA and Washoe County, NV.

The Twin Peaks Herd Management Area Wild Horse and Burro Gather Plan is available online here or can be requested by contacting the BLM Northern California District office at 530-257-0456.

The commenting period will conclude July 1.
