California Assemblywoman Luz Rivas (D-39) introduced AB 1922 to mandate climate change curriculum in classrooms.
Under the bill, climate change education would be a requirement for students in grades first through sixth, and a graduation requirement for students in grades seventh through 12th, beginning in 2025.
“As the youth that will inherit the brunt of climate change effects, we need them to be a part of the solution,” Rivas said. “AB 1922 will educate, help prepare, and give our next generation the tools to shape their futures in the wake of our current climate crisis.”
The bill seeks to amend Section 51210 of the education code to include climate change as an additional science requirement. The bill does not specify what the curriculum would be composed of.
