Gov. Gavin Newsom (CA-D) released a statement on Sept. 14 of his intention to veto SB 1, a bill that was passed late on the last night of the legislative session.
The bill would essentially render every environmental rule passed by Trump useless.
Environmentalists were angered over his pledge, saying the bill would have protected California’s waters and fish against the current administration.
Newsom said he will veto the bill even though he generally supports its message of keeping California’s air, water and endangered species safe.
If Newsom had signed SB 1, water agencies were threating to pull out of the water compromise set last December by former Gov. Jerry Brown (D).
The compromise was between Central Valley cities and farms to direct some water for fish populations, although not as much as the State Water Resources Control Board would have preferred.
Newsom said in his released statement that SB1 wouldn’t give California “any new authority to push back against the Trump administration’s environmental policies.”
