Legal Ledger Brief: CA bill to end fracking introduced

California Sens. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Monique Limуn (D-Santa Barbara) recently introduced Senate Bill 467, which would halt hydraulic fracturing (fracking) entirely by 2027.

The legislation would halt issuance of permits for fracking starting in 2022, and then completely prohibit extraction methods by 2027. The bill would also prohibit permits for oil and gas extraction within 2,500 feet of any homes, schools or healthcare facilities by 2022.

The bill comes shortly after Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called on the legislature to ban fracking. “Extracting massive amounts of oil—particularly with destructive techniques such as fracking—is totally inconsistent with California’s commitment to a sustainable climate future,” Wiener said.
