Legal Ledger Brief: Brazil beef exports to U.S. increase

Trade tensions between China and Australia have provoked China to buy more U.S. beef, clearing the way for Brazil to export more beef to the U.S., according to a Reuters report.

As of May, Brazilian beef shipments to the U.S. rose 165.6 percent to 33,800 tons. In May alone, exports surged 186 percent. This made the U.S. the third largest foreign buyer of Brazilian beef.

“We expect the U.S. will direct part of its meat to China to offset the reduction in exports from Australia to that country,” said Lygia Pimentel, director of agribusiness consultancy Agrifatto, told Reuters.

“With this, Brazil ends up gaining space in the U.S. market.”

USDA reported the U.S. sold 48,292 tons of beef to China from January to April, up from 3,255 tons in 2020.
