Legal Ledger Brief: BQA certification needed for transportation

For livestock haulers who deliver cattle to major packing plants, a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Transportation certificate will soon be required.

“Jan. 1, 2020 is the deadline most major packers have set. They will not accept cattle from transporters who are not BQA Transportation certified,” said Heidi Carroll, South Dakota BQA Coordinator.

“Transporters include both farmer feeders and commercial truckers, essentially any individual hauling directly to a harvest facility.”

To assist transporters in becoming certified, a multi-state workshop will be held by South Dakota State University Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and University of Minnesota Extension.

The workshop will take place on Dec. 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Sioux Falls Regional Livestock and will be the last in-person workshop in the three participating states. The certification may also be completed online.

For more information on the certification, visit bqa.org/programs/bqa-transportation.
