The Bureau of Land Mangement (BLM) Battle Mountain District will conduct a wild burro gather on the Bullfrog Herd Management Area (HMA) near Beatty, NV.
The roundup will take place sometime in mid-September.
“The purpose of the gather is to reduce overpopulation of wild burros within and outside the HMA, where excess wild burros are a nuisance in the town of Beatty and a safety risk along U.S. Highway 95, and to prevent further degradation of public lands by helping to balance herd size,” the agency said in an official statement.
BLM plans to gather around 600 wild burros over a 14-day period using temporary water and feed bait traps.
The current Appropriate Management Level for the HMA is 58 to 91 burros, and the current population exceeds 909 percent of the recommended level.
The HMA consists of 157,180 acres and is approximately 16 miles long and 18 miles wide.
