A bipartisan coalition of House of Representatives members has introduced a resolution to save the iconic giant sequoias.
The Save our Sequoias (SOS) Act will provide land managers with the emergency tools and resources needed to save the trees and ensure their long-term survival. The SOS Act would create a Giant Sequoia Health and Resiliency Assessment to prioritize wildfire risk reduction treatments in the highest-risk groves and track the progress of scientific forest management activities. It would also streamline environmental reviews and consultations while establishing a reforestation strategy for sequoias destroyed in recent wildfires.
More than 90 diverse organizations support the bill, including the California Cattlemen’s Association, California Farm Bureau Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Public Lands Council.
