Legal Ledger Brief: Bill to expand CA national monument

Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Alex Padilla (D-CA) have introduced legislation to expand the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument to include about 3,925 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands in Lake County, CA.

The Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument Expansion Act would require BLM and the U.S.Forest Service to improve Tribal engagement and cooperative management of the national monument, according to the senators.

“California has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world—and it is our duty to preserve these pristine outdoor spaces and rare natural habitats to combat the climate crisis and benefit future generations,” Padilla said.

The senators said the bill will not impact privately owned, state, Tribal or nonfederal land in any way. Companion legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives in January
