In an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, President-elect Joe Biden stated the 25 percent tariffs instituted by President Donald Trump on China under the Phase One trade deal would remain in place at the start of his administration.
“I’m not going to make any immediate moves, and the same applies to the tariffs,” Biden said, adding that he will conduct a review of the current U.S. policy on China. Biden went further, stating he wanted to “get us back on the same page as our allies,” to develop a strategy. Biden believes the U.S. does have the “leverage” dealing with China and wants to invest in “American research and development, infrastructure and education” to achieve this goal.
Biden said how much will get done will depend on how Republicans in the Senate and House collaborate and how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) operates if he continues to control the Senate.
