The American Prairie Reserve (APR) is adding more land to its arsenal and most recently has purchased a 50 square mile ranch, 73 Ranch, next to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in Valley County, MT.
The purchase expands the conservation group’s size to more than 700 square miles. The Bureau of Land Management attempted to buy the ranch in August but was unable to after a government-ordered appraisal did not meet the seller’s terms.
APR has been buying up land since 2001 with the intent to allow bison to roam freely and currently owns about 1,000 head of bison.
