Legal Ledger Brief: Antitrust concerns from WY delegation

Citing the impact on sheep producers in Wyoming from the JBS acquisition of Mountain States Rosen (MSR) lamb processing facility, Sens. Michael Enzi (R-WY) and John Barrasso (R-WY) along with Rep. Liz Cheney (WY-At Large) sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

The letter sent earlier in August expresses anti-trust concerns and states, “The sale leaves producers who have dedicated their lives to sheep production with little to no recourses to sell their product and almost absolute financial disaster when agriculture producers, supply chains, and markets are already struggling due to complications surrounding COVID-19.”

The MSR facility processed approximately 350,000 sheep, or 20 percent of the U.S. lamb market annually. The MSR plant sale was finalized on July 31, 2020.
