The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine recently published its 2020 report on antimicrobials sold or distributed for use in food-producing animals, which found a decrease in sales and distribution by 3 percent between 2019-20.
Overall, this is a 38 percent decrease since 2015, which was the peak year of sales, according to the report.
“This suggests that continued efforts to support the judicious use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals are having an impact,” the report read.
FDA said its objective is to slow the development of antimicrobial resistances and preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials for fighting disease in animals and humans.
