A trio of representatives has introduced the Carbon Sequestration Collaboration Act to improve the ability to capture and store greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the atmosphere.
Reps. Glenn “G.T.” Thompson (R-PA-15), Frank Lucas (R-OK-03) and Bruce Westerman (R-AR-04) introduced the legislation in an attempt to recognize the potential that soil has to sequester carbon through agriculture and forestry.
“The Department of Energy is already doing great research on large-scale carbon sequestration opportunities, but there is a knowledge gap when it comes to making use of smaller carbon sinks like soils and rangeland,” Lucas said in a statement.
The bill would require the secretaries of Energy, Interior and Agriculture to establish an initiative to evaluate terrestrial carbon sequestration and carbon sequestration in geological formations.
