The city of Los Angeles submitted on July 17 a new draft of a proposed ordinance that would ban rodeo and bull-riding events.
If the ordinance passes, the following will be banned in the city: bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, or any other activity that involves wrestling an animal to the ground, roping an animal, or attempting to ride and remain mounted on a bucking animal.
The ordinance was referred to the Neighborhoods and Community Enrichment Committee on July 18, but further action has not been taken, according to the Los Angeles City Council’s file management system, LACityClerk Connect.
The Western Sports Industry Coalition, a group advocating for the protection of Western sports events and traditions, strongly opposes the ordinance and encourages supporters to get involved by signing its petition at RuralAmericaInAction.com, commenting on the city council’s page at tinyurl.com/4xfdfyse, or becoming a member of Western Justice at www.westernjustice.info/memberships.
