Japan is opening its doors fully back open to Canadian beef imports, lifting the last of restrictions from a 20-year ban following a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta in 2003.
Japan will now allow processed beef and beef patties from cattle raised in Canada.
This is good news for Canada, as Japan is the country’s second-largest export market. Under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, Japan also reduced beef import tariffs beginning April 1.
