According to the 2023 Irrigation and Water Management Survey from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), 212,714 U.S. farms irrigated 53.1 million acres with 81 million acre-feet of water.

The survey completed every five years by NASS showed in 2018, 231,474 farms irrigated 55.9 million acres with 83.4 million acre-feet. The survey noted that groundwater from on-farm wells supplied 54% of irrigation water, with an average well depth of 241 feet.

Arkansas, California, Idaho, Nebraska and Texas represented half of the irrigated acres and more than half of the water applied.
