In a landmark decision to accelerate domestic critical mineral production, the Department of the Interior (DOI) approved the Velvet-Wood uranium and vanadium mine in San Juan County, UT.

This is the first project approved under a new 14-day expedited environmental review, launched in response to President Donald Trump’s national energy emergency. Anfield Energy now has permission to reopen the Velvet Mine and develop nearby resources with minimal surface disturbance. DOI said the project will create local jobs, focus on underground mining and restore the land after operation.

Anfield also plans to reopen the nearby Shootaring Canyon uranium mill to reduce U.S. dependence on imported uranium concentrate.
