On Wednesday, May 23, India requested a dispute consultation with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. India claims the tariffs are inconsistent with the U.S.’ trade obligations under WTO. This complaint relates to the March 23 implementation of import duties of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. In a separate, though related matter, the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body on May 28 granted a U.S. request to establish a dispute panel regarding accusations that India is subsidizing its exports. — WLJ
