Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) signed House Bill 712 into law on April 2, which will shorten time periods and increase penalties regarding estray livestock.

The bill amends Section 25-2302 in the Idaho Code and shortens the time period owners have to collect stray livestock from five days to three days.

The maximum fee for food and care would increase from $2 per head per day for cattle and horses to $5 per day. The fees would be in addition to mileage and inspection fees, and fees relating to the sale of livestock.

The bill also imposes a fine of $250 for the first offense, $500 for a second offense within five years of the first offense and a $750 fine plus a misdemeanor for a third or subsequent violation within five years of the previous violation.
