An ongoing outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Hungary and Slovakia has prompted a temporary meat ban from the U.S., the United Kingdom and 15 non-European Union countries, according to the Swine Health Information Center.

Hungary confirmed its first FMD cases in over 50 years on March 6, affecting large dairy farms in Győr-Moson-Sopron county. Slovakia has reported five outbreaks, including a March 30 case impacting 3,487 animals near its western border. On March 31, the latest outbreak occurred at a large cattle farm in Plavecký Štvrtok near the Czech and Austrian borders. Tracing suggests the virus may have spread via a worker returning from Hungary.
