President Donald Trump announced on April 9 that he was pausing higher tariffs for 90 days for most countries who did not retaliate with tariffs of their own.
A 10% across-the-board tariff will remain in place. The pause on additional tariffs does not apply to China, which had retaliated with 84% hikes.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump wrote on social media Wednesday.
On Thursday, the White House clarified the 125% tariff did not include the 20% fentanyl tariffs from earlier this year, bringing the actual tariffs against China to 145%.
In response, China raised its reciprocal tariffs to 125% on Friday.
Products covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement will have no tariffs, but products not covered will face a 25% tariff.
