The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a declaration enabling the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to grant Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for animal drugs against the New World screwworm (NWS).
This action applies only to animal drugs. “Today we are taking decisive action to safeguard the nation’s food supply from this emerging threat,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Currently, no FDA-approved drugs exist for NWS in the U.S. The EUA process enables the FDA to authorize the use of existing or foreign-approved drugs, providing veterinarians and livestock producers with rapid access to treatment options. Future FDA guidance will outline the proper use of any products authorized for emergency use.
