Guest Opinion: Beef producers plan for future generations—Pass it on!

The Perrier family of Dalebanks Ranch in Eureka

There probably isn’t a beef producer out there who hasn’t thought about what must be done to pass their operation to another generation interested in cattle. While getting input from your family is important, so is the knowledge that professionals in legal and financial matters can share. And like any good business person, you’ll want to make sure the next generation is producing a product somebody will want.

That’s where your beef checkoff comes in.

Your beef checkoff plays an important role growing and maintaining beef demand. With demand comes the opportunity for cattle producers to sustain their businesses for generations to come.

For the past two years, the checkoff’s “Pass It On” series has featured stories from nine producers from the Carolinas to Montana. In the videos—featured on MyBeefCheckoff.com—you can see these producers talk about ways beef checkoff programs have directly impacted the viability of their cattle operation, and how that has enhanced the ability of another generation to be on the farm or ranch doing a job they love.

These beef producers can cite direct use of checkoff programs: development of new beef cuts that they now feature in their own direct sales marketing; cattle handling information and recommendations that increase the value of their cattle; or beef recipe development for foods they prepare and sell in their non-farm enterprises.

More importantly, these cattle producers can step back and see the bigger picture of the many ways their checkoff investment has helped beef demand, and in turn the longevity of beef production. They understand that if people around the world don’t want beef, there won’t be much opportunity for coming generations in the beef business.

While the checkoff is supporting and building demand for your favorite protein, its work also makes way for the future of many cattle operations. Research conducted by the checkoff keeps close tabs on what consumers want from your end products, as well as the information they want to hear when it comes to the kind of care you provide for the land and the animals.

To make sure consumers can find that information, the checkoff works at giving them transparency to beef production at FactsAboutBeef.com and all the information they need to make decisions in the grocery aisle, the fast food lane, or at a restaurant by using BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com.

So, as you think about what the future may hold for your beef operation, remember that the work of your beef checkoff investment not only creates beef demand, but simultaneously creates opportunity for ongoing beef production for generations to come.
