Through partnerships facilitated by this funding opportunity, critical activities will be supported, including applying fertility control to manage herd growth, monitoring herd and land health, and enhancing rangeland habitat for wild horses, burros and other wildlife.
As of March 2023, the current population of wild horses and burros on public lands is estimated to be 82,883 animals, a slight increase from the 2022 estimate of 82,384, and remains over three times the number that would be in balance with available resources. Since 2018, BLM has removed nearly 70,000 animals and treated 5,600 head with fertility control to reduce the threat to rangelands and overpopulation.
Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2024, and can be found at tinyurl.com/3z5e2nzy.
