The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has withdrawn its proposed “Salmonella Framework for Raw Poultry Products.”
The framework aimed to reduce salmonella-related illnesses by classifying poultry products with certain salmonella levels and serotypes as adulterated under the Poultry Products Inspection Act. It also proposed stricter microbial monitoring requirements and revised sampling methods.
FSIS received over 1,400 comments, many expressing concern about legal authority, scientific justification and impacts on small processors. Citing the need for further assessment, FSIS withdrew the proposal.
