USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced it will resume cecal sampling in sheep and lamb on Feb. 1.
During 2024, FSIS is collaborating with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to employ a One Health approach to investigate antimicrobial resistance at production, slaughter and retail points.
APHIS will gather fecal samples during production, and FDA will collect product samples at retail, characterizing salmonella, campylobacter and generic E. coli for antimicrobial resistance. Through these One Health collaborations, FSIS aims to gain valuable insights for advancing health in both animals and humans.
