USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) received a petition from a company requesting that FSIS amend its policies regarding the amount of cheek meat allowed in certain beef products.

North Star Imported asked the agency to allow unlimited quantities of cheek meat in certain beef products and identify cheek meat as “beef” in the ingredients statement.

“Beef Cheek Meat is considered meat and should be permitted in products like ground beef at levels not restricted by the current regulation,” the company wrote. “We appreciate USDA FSIS looking into this matter. We look forward to your response.”
