The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union (EU) have agreed to new rules restricting how plant-based foods can be labeled and marketed.
Farmers Guide reported the decision was finalized on March 5 after negotiations would prohibit the use of 31 animal-related names and cuts for plant-based alternatives.
Terms such as “beef,” “pork,” “chicken,” “breast,” “thigh” and “bacon,” along with “steak” and “liver,” will no longer be allowed on plant-based labels. However, widely used product descriptors including “burger,” “sausage” and “nuggets” will remain permitted if clearly identified as plant-based.
The restrictions may also apply to emerging products developed through cellular agriculture, even though those foods are not yet widely available in European markets.
