The Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), an environmental group based in Palo Alto, CA, purchased 1,340 acres on the southwestern edge of Sargent Ranch, known as Pescadero Ranch, for $15.6 million, according to local news outlet Monterey Herald.

The newly acquired land, larger than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, features oak-covered hills, pastures and streams. POST plans to maintain cattle grazing on the ranch while preserving its natural landscape, with future transfer plans including restrictions against development.

According to the Monterey Herald, Sargent Ranch’s owners are pursuing a quarry project and completed an environmental impact report in 2022. The current owners purchased the ranch from a bankrupt developer in 2013 who was pursuing plans to build golf courses and a casino.
