A citizen-led petition campaigning to ban slaughterhouses in Denver, CO, has submitted signatures to the Denver Clerk and Recorder.

The effort is led by animal activist group Pro-Animal Future, which is vying to close the last of slaughterhouses in Denver: Superior Farms. The sheep processing facility has the capacity to process 500,000 head per year and is one of the largest processors for lamb in the country.

The proposed ballot title poses the question of whether the city and county of Denver should prohibit slaughterhouses beginning in January 2026.

In an Aug. 13 op-ed for local media outlet Westword, Pro-Animal Future campaigner Alaina Sigler wrote, “In this age of innovative meat alternatives as well as traditional plant food galore, we recognize that leaving slaughter behind will create a kinder economy for all.”
