Cummins Inc. has tentatively settled U.S. regulatory claims concerning emissions certification and compliance for select engines primarily used in pick-up trucks.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Cummins has agreed to pay a $1.67 billion penalty and spend $325 million to remedy violations, including software “defeat devices” that circumvented emissions testing and certification requirements in violation of the Clean Air Act and California law.
Cummins said it has recalled model year 2019 RAM 2500 and 3500 trucks and has initiated a recall of model years 2013 through 2018 RAM 2500 and 3500 trucks nationwide. Cummins plans to prolong the warranty duration for specific components in the repaired vehicles, finance and execute initiatives to alleviate the emission of excess ozone-producing nitrogen oxides from the vehicles and implement new internal protocols to prevent future emissions irregularities.
