Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is monitoring up to four possible wolf dens, though none have been confirmed, Eric Odell, the agency’s wolf conservation program manager, told the Post Independent.

Using GPS collar data, CPW is tracking one to four pairs that may be denning. Any pups would likely stay underground for another month, and exact numbers may remain unknown.

CPW plans to deploy newly hired range riders to protect livestock near the areas. These riders, who patrol areas on horseback, will work mostly at night in a defensive role. Brian Dreher, assistant director for the CPW Terrestrial Wildlife Branch, emphasized that their goal is to prevent contact between wolves and livestock.

Nighttime patrolling on horseback – oh great:( Resulting in riding a horse with a weight of a rider for way too many hours over rough terrain with headlamps on . Unfortunately all at the expense of unrealistic wild kingdom lovers 😡 I hope Colorado state is not paying for the night time patrolling riders extravagance!
