CPW to discuss fur-ban citizen petition

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission is set to discuss a citizen petition on a commercial fur ban at its March 4-5 meeting.

On March 4, the commission will consider whether to deny two petitions as recommended by the director: a citizen petition requesting mandatory checks for bobcats, swift fox and beavers; and a citizen petition prohibiting the sale of furbearer furs with some exemptions.

“Outside activist organizations are pressuring the CPW Commission to bypass science, ignore voters, and impose a commercial fur ban that Colorado has already rejected,” the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association said in opposition to the petition in an e-newsletter.

In addition to the citizen petitions, the commission will also review five wolf compensation claims and a formal request to delay additional wolf releases.
