On Aug. 16, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and USDA’s Wildlife Services attempted to lethally remove a wolf responsible for six livestock depredations in Rio Blanco County.

After fire activity from the Elk Fire subsided, crews resumed efforts but were unsuccessful due to dense terrain. Following six days of systematic searching, the operation was discontinued. No further depredations have been reported since.

CPW Director Jeff Davis emphasized the agency’s commitment to “maintaining a viable, self-sustaining wolf population” while minimizing conflicts, praising producers for working with CPW on non-lethal deterrents.
