The comment period has been extended on a U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) petition to the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) regarding definitions for meat alternatives. The petition asks FSIS to define meat as coming from slaughtered animals and beef as coming from slaughtered bovine animals in its Food Standards and Labeling Policy Book. The petition was filed in February and the original comment period ended last week. According to the USCA, the extension was granted following a request by the North American Meat Institute with the new comment period ending on May 17. Comments can be submitted online at regulations.gov searching for Docket Number FSIS-2018-0016-0001. — WLJ
