Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) told lawmakers it has spent $3 million relocating wolves, more than double the $800,000 estimated when voters passed Proposition 114 in 2020, reported CBS News Colorado.
Ranchers say the program is mismanaged, citing the relocation of a depredating Oregon pack to Pitkin County, where livestock deaths continued. “Promises broken. Total program failure,” said Garfield County Commissioner Perry Will.
CPW Director Jeff Davis admitted responsibility and said more wolves may be removed. According to CBS, compensation funds are reportedly depleted.
Despite ranchers calling for a pause, CPW plans another relocation from Canada in December.
