A husband and wife pair was caught smuggling millions of dollars of beef smuggled in from Brazil, according to English-language Chinese news outlet, South China Morning Post. The “uncertified” beef was being sold in a wet market and was valued at $8.8 million (U.S. dollars). The husband was sentenced to five years in prison, and the wife was sentenced to four years in prison, both relatively severe sentences. Chinese food safety laws require those found guilty of selling uncertified food to be imprisoned for one to five years. The pair may additionally face fines amounting to more than $17.5 million.
