On April 24, China said there were no ongoing discussions with the U.S. on tariffs, following earlier reports that tensions might be easing.
“At present there are absolutely no negotiations on the economy and trade between China and the U.S.,” Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yadong told reporters in Mandarin, translated and reported by CNBC.
He continued that if the U.S. really wanted to resolve the problem, it should cancel all unilateral measures on China. Earlier in April, the U.S. added 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, to which the country immediately retaliated with tariffs of its own and restrictions on critical minerals exports. In late April, China also threatened countermeasures against countries that might consider making deals with the U.S. at the expense of China.
